Itinerary

Day 1 Sun 16th March Meals: (L,D) Lodging: Travelodge Bath Waterside  

  • Arrival at London Heathrow Airport 

  • Transfer to lodging in Bath (2 hours)

  • Group lunch

  • Orientation on health, safety and logistics

  • Visit to Fairfield House, a not-for-profit Community Interest Company founded to protect and celebrate the legacy to Bath of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie. 

  • Welcome dinner in a local restaurant in Bath. 


Day 2 Mon 17th March Meals: (B,L) Lodging: Travelodge Bath Waterside  

  • Breakfast at hotel 

  • Adobe exchange day with Bath Spa University.  Students will have the opportunity to learn about the cultural, historical and political aspects of England, as well as the chance connect with students from Bath Spa university and explore Bath.  

    • Details of this experience will be determined with faculty from both universities 

    • We will seek to engage students from the African and Caribbean Society 

  • Mixer with students from African and Caribbean Society, Harmonia Society,  Music Theater Society, Theater Society, and Film Society. 

  • Free time to relax and reflect 

  • Independent Dinner in Bath

Day 3 Tuesday, 18th March   Meals: (B,L,D) Lodging:  Travelodge Hotel Oxford  

  • Breakfast at hotel

  • Transfer to Salsbury (1 hour) 

  • Visit Stonehenge

    • 4,000 years old megalithic structure shrouded in mystery 

    • Enjoy a traditional British picnic (weather dependant)  

  • Transfer to Oxford (2 hours)

  • “Uncomfortable” walking tour of Oxford 

    • The tour will highlight histories of race, gender, class, and disability, while raising uncomfortable questions about the lasting legacies of empire.​

    • Mixer with Black Students Society to discuss their experiences as minority students at one of the world's most famous universities. 

Day 4 Wednesday 19th March   Meals: (B,D) Lodging: Safe Stay Elephant and Castle

  • Breakfast at hotel

  • Oxford University exchange day 

    • Organized by Bowie and Oxford Faculty, details TBD

  • Independent lunch at Oxford Covered Market

  • 2 hour transfer to London 

  • Free time to relax and reflect 

  • Group dinner in Elephant and Castle.

Day 5 Thursday 20th March     Meals: (B,L) Lodging: Safe Stay Elephant and Castle

  • Breakfast at the hotel

  • Engage with teachers and students at a secondary school in London, facilitated by Journey to Justice

    • Journey to Justice is a nonprofit founded in 2013 dedicated to highlighting inequality within the UK.  

    • The content for the discussion can be led by Bowie State Students and gives both sets of students an opportunity to discuss differences and similarities with UK and US communities.  

  • Service learning / free time  - Small group placements depend on students interest and group size. Details will be developed after group size and background of participants are known. 

  • Independant dinner at Tooting Market

    • Traditionally an area with a high immigrant population, the market dates back to the 1930’s and has vendors with cuisines from around the world.

Day 6 Friday 21st March     Meals: (B,L) Lodging: Safe Stay Elephant and Castle

  • Breakfast at hotel

  • Visit the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton

    • Heritage center devoted to the histories of people of African and Caribbean descent in Britain. 

  • Time to explore Brixton

  • Service learning / free time  

  • Theater tour followed by a performance in the evening

    • Details TBD when Spring schedule comes out 

  • Independant dinner with suggestions from guide

Day 7 Saturday 22nd March Meals: (B,D) Lodging: Safe Stay Elephant and Castle

  • Breakfast at lodging

  • Visit the London Museum Docklands focussing on London, Sugar and Slavery and Windrush Generation exhibitions.

  • Independent lunch and free time in the relatively recently gentrified historic dock area, known as the the Docklands, or in central London

  • Service learning / free time

  • Farewell dinner in a Caribbean restaurant in Brixton

Day 8 Sunday 23nd March Meals: (B) Lodging: None

  • Breakfast at lodging

  • Departure to Heathrow

Registration deadline: December 2, 2024

Student Cost: $2,390 with minimum 16 students; $2,990 with minimum 12 students
