This 8-day South Carolina program immerses students in the unique history and diverse heritage of South Carolina and the surrounding Sea Islands. Activities include visiting Charleston's historic sites, engaging with the Gullah Geechee culture in Beaufort, and exploring natural environments such as the Francis Beidler Forest and St. Helena Island. Through expert discussions, hands-on activities, and tours, students will learn about the Gullah Geechee's history, their struggles to maintain land rights, and the region's natural wonders.

Day 1

Arrival to Charleston. Walking tour of the city. Orientation and welcome dinner.

Day 2

Morning worship service at historic Black church. Tour of John’s Island and residents. Sunset on Kiawah Island.

Day 3

Visit to McLeod Historic Site. Crabbing experiential learning engagement.

Day 4

Visit to wildlife sanctuary. Visit to International African American Museum.

Day 5

Conversation with the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage members. Gullah Heritage Walking Tour in Beaufort.

Day 6

Visit to Penn Center on St. Helena Island. Free time to explore.

Day 7

Visit to a homestead. Conversation with coastal conservation experts.

Departure.
