This 10-day Ecuador program immerses students in diverse cultural and political experiences, from Quito to El Chota. Activities include engaging with political activists, learning Afro-Ecuadorian history and dance, and meeting indigenous rights activists. Through expert discussions, hands-on activities, and cultural exchanges, students will explore Afro-Ecuadorian and indigenous communities, understanding their histories, cultures, and social dynamics.

Itinerary 

Day 1

Arrival to Quito. Welcome dinner.

Day 2

Program orientation. Guided walking tour of Quito.

Day 3

Exchange with a nonprofit organization working to promote ancestral and contemporary cultural identity of Afro-Ecuadorians. Gondola ride to the top of Quito.

Day 4

Cultural richness workshop including dance with local students. Visit to the Peace Corps office

Day 5

Conversation with political science professor. Meet with an indigenous rights political organization

Day 6

Visit to the largest market in South America. Meet with and Afro-Ecuadorian women’s cooperative.

Day 7

Farm Visit in El Chota. Soccer with community members and cultural night.

Day 8

Mask making workshop in Mascarillas. Reflection with community leaders.

Day 9

Meet with indigenous rights organization. Hike to Peguche waterfall.

Day 10

Visit to Cuicocha Lagoon. Visit Museo Intiñan Solar. Farewell dinner. Departure
