This 8-day itinerary offers students a rich exploration of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, delving into Afro-Costa Rican culture through engaging activities like a cacao tour, a rainforest hike, and a conversation with a local calypso artist. Students will gain historical insights at San Jose’s Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, discover the agricultural and medicinal importance of local resources, and unwind in the Arenal hot springs. Through diverse experiences and interactions with the local community, students will learn about the essence of pura vida and the cultural diversity that defines Costa Rica.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival to San Jose. Walking tour of the city. Orientation and welcome dinner.
Day 2
Visit to the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. Walking tour in Limón.
Day 3
Cacao Tour with an indigenous community. Visit to Casa de Cultura in Puerto Viejo.
Day 4
Snorkeling and hiking tour in Cahuita National Park. Meet with a Calypso artist. Beach time.
Day 5
Peer-to-peer exchange with students from local university. Free time in Puerto Viejo.
Day 6
Tour of a banana plantation. Free time to explore. Fireside lecture with local professor.
Day 7
Visit to La Fortuna de Arenal. Hot springs visit. Farewell dinner.
