This 8-day program in Oaxaca, Mexico, immerses students in the study of migration and cultural heritage, set against a backdrop of historical and natural attractions. Activities include visiting Zapotec villages, engaging with local students and scholars, and touring Oaxaca’s colonial center. Students will gain insights into the challenges of migration from Central America and learn about the local culture through discussions, workshops, and hands-on experiences. Highlights of the trip include visits to a migrant services center, an archaeological site, and Hierve el Agua hot springs, providing a comprehensive understanding of the region’s history, culture, and migration issues.

Itinerary 

Day 1

Arrival to Oaxaca. Orientation and welcome dinner.

Day 2

Guided tour of Oaxaca. Visit to a famous artist studio and workshop.

Day 3

Day trip to a Zapotec village. Meet with members of a women’s artisan cooperative.

Day 4

Discussion with managers of a local migrant services center. Service day.

Day 5

Lecture by a local college professor. Peer-to-peer exchange with students. Free time.

Day 6

Visit to a community-based ecotourism town. Ziplining adventure.

Day 7

Conversation on migration with community members. Visit to Hierve el Agua hot springs. Farewell dinner.
