This program will introduce students to the immense potential as well as the challenges of this sector. Students will learn from established indigenous community-based tourism providers and complete a service learning project to support an emerging project. The experience will be an unforgettable cultural exchange contributing to economic development and environmental and cultural conservation in Panama.

Day 1

Arrival and orientation 

Day 2

Embera village, learn about eco-tourism development, nighttime crocodile boat tour

Day 3

Environmental and cultural workshops, travel to Pacific coast

Day 4

Women’s artisanal cooperative, conversation with tourism students and community leaders

Day 5

Cultural activities in mountainous Ngobe-Bugle region, share time with local hosts 

Day 6

Cultural-tourism activities, gather information and resources for project, cultural farewell activity

Day 7

Panama Canal locks and museum, historic Panama City tour, farewell group meal
